GREICH

St Gotthard Pass Next Lauterbrunnen

We took the train to Oberwald via Andermatt. This bypassed the Furka pass which the profile showed was not doable, at least by us with fully loaded bikes.

The path from Oberwald meandered along the river, it was mainly gravel but earth in places. It was very pretty and pleasant but slow going. Soon after leaving Oberwald we noticed a golf club with a restaurant and had a pleasant lunch with our customary ‘50’ of local white wine.

We joined the main road close to our destination. It was narrow and very busy in both directions and impatient cars and trucks were squeezing past.

Our apartment was in the tiny village of Greich, reached by cable car from Morel. We pushed our bikes into the car. Greich is half way up and the cable car stopped against a tower about 30 meters high.

Various mechanisms clanked and a complicated system of platforms assembled itself allowing us to wheel our bikes to a deck at the top of the tower.

Once there we found an elevator to take us to ground level.

The apartment was in the top floor of an old house and although small it had the most incredible views. We ate all our meals sitting on the balcony.

We took the cable car to Riederalp Bahn, the top station, and then yet higher on the gondola. The view of the glacier took our breath away. We walked along the dirt path to Aletschwald. Theoretically it should take about an hour but it took us more like three hours stopping every few meters to take photographs and admire the view.
