SWITZERLAND 2009: Trip Report

THE STILLTHORN

Lauterbrunnen Next Grosse Scheidegg

There are two main viewing points in the area. The Top of Europe on Jungfrau and the Stillthorn. The Stillthorn is cheaper and some say better.

We took a cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp then a small train to Murren and then another cable car with an intermediate station to the Stillthorn (the intermediate station is the white building on the crag).

Our half fare passes worked on them all despite it being a tourist attraction.

They also worked on all the ferries we took later in the trip. When we planned our tour we hadn't reckoned on all the side trips we would take, or how well integrated the Swiss transport network. The half fare cards saved us heaps.

There are spectacular views of the surrounding alps, photographs can’t do it justice.

In the afternoon we took the small train to Eigersalp next to the Eiger Glacier. That is the last stop before the Top of Europe. It was a special narrow gauge train because regular trains cannot make the grade and was beautifully fitted out in the old fashioned style.

We didn’t have much time to admire the spectacular views if we were to catch
the last train back. We had missed lunch and were too hungry to walk. We
stopped off at Wengen where we enjoyed a bowl of goulash soup and a beer.
