SWITZERLAND 2009: Trip Report

GROSSE SCHEIDEGG

The Stillthorn Next Montreaux

We took the train to Grindelwald and then the bus to the summit at Grosse Scheidegg. The bikes went on a rack on the back of the bus. The road is steep one lane and ‘post’ buses have absolute priority. From time to time it played the distinctive bugle notes to warn other users to get off the road.

We sat on the back seat and watched the bikes sway alarmingly on the rack as the bus swung round the bends.

We coasted down feeling guilty as we passed cyclists toiling upwards, they were earning the run down. We consoled ourselves with an excellent lunch at a guest house restaurant just above Meiringen. We made sure to have the eponymous meringue for dessert.

After Meiringen we cycled mainly along the side of the lake. It was initially flat but there were a couple of stiff climbs as we approached Interlaken so we did have to contribute some effort for the day.
