DANUBE 2010: Trip Report

DONAUESCHINGEN

Eglisau Next Sigmaringen

It was raining heavily when we got up and we thought we might have to take the train. However at about ten o’clock it cleared and became perfect cycling weather. We walked the steep hill from the village and then climbed the long but well graded hill to Bhul.

After Bhul we kept getting lost because rather than taking a map for that short leg, we had written down the names of the places on our route but unfortunately we had written down the name of the district not the town.  The GPS on the iPhone wasn't working either because we only had a Swiss SIM card.

In Erzingen we stopped at a bakery-café and asked directions. The baker recommended an alternative route through Hallau. It was a good choice, some long hard climbs but magnificent views through the vineyards. We were back in Switzerland so the GPS was working.

Then we got to the busy L214. The road was narrow and very steep, too dangerous to ride with vans and trucks speeding past and so we pushed our bikes for several kilometers. When we reached Oberweisen we saw the freeway sign and our hearts sank but then we noticed the alternative bike path.

The ride was tougher than we expected and we were tired when we cycled into Donaueschingen. We booked into the hotel and walked to the Lidl supermarket where we bought a German Fonic SIM card.
