DANUBE 2010: Trip Report

ULM

Ehingen Next Donauworth

We detoured from the Danube to Blauberren, the source of the river Blau. The source is a pool that bubbles up from a deep limestone cavern. Blauberren is a center for cave exploration and cave diving.

Ulm cathedral has the tallest spire in the world. We could see it from many miles away when we were approaching the city and it helped us avoid getting lost among the maze of cycling paths.

We were staying in a bed and breakfast in the old quarter of Ulm. Our room overlooked a water race and the view was quite impressive.

We had only cycled about 45km and so were in time for a late but excellent lunch at the pub-restaurant next to our accommodation and then strolled along the Danube. The river had grown markedly since we had last seen it and it was now a major waterway.

A pleasant stroll was marred by groups of rowdy skinheads sitting on the ancient walls drinking and publicly urinating.
