DANUBE 2010: Trip Report

KELHEIM

Eichstatt Next Deggendorf

After a pleasant day of cycling we booked into the ‘Toni’ guesthouse at Dietfurt. The owner was a character with stained leather shorts and braces, doing everything on the run, talking to us in rapid German notwithstanding that we couldn't understand a word..

The room was plain but comfortable and we slept soundly. It was a Monday night and only one pub was serving food, but it was good.

We noticed from a poster that Dietfurt’s claim to fame is that Elvis Presley was stationed there during his time in the army.

The next day we arrived at Kelheim in time for lunch and after some searching found a guesthouse that was happy to let us use their washer and dryer. This was essential as we were just about out of clean underwear. The room was plain but large and quiet. The business was principally a restaurant but they were letting out a few spare rooms to get a few extra euros.

The reason for the short day was that the stretch of the Danube from Weltenburg to Kelheim is not accessible by bike and is reputed to be particularly beautiful.

We took the return trip on the boat. The scenery was pleasant, passing through a rocky gorge, but not as spectacular as we had been led to expect. It was unseasonably hot and swimmers and kayakers were sunning themselves on the small beaches. It was pleasant to sit on the deck and enjoy a beer whilst watching the scenery go by.
