We cycled to Regensburg and then fast forwarded on the train to Plattling and then cycled the remaining 15 km to Deggendorf. From the train it looked as though the scenery was much the same as we had been cycling through so we didn’t feel we had missed much.

Although we only had time for a quick look as we walked to the station Regensburg was a city with a cosmopolitan bustle, quite different from the towns we had passed through so far. The Danube was also noticeably wider.

Margaret wanted a light lunch and ordered a ham salad. But she got an enormous platter of cold cuts with a whole pig's knuckle in the center.

At Deggendorf we checked into the justly highly recommended Hotel Hottl for two nights. We were concerned when we found our room overlooked the busy main street but thanks to excellent sound and light proofing we combined comfort with a fine view.

After ten consecutive days of cycling we needed a break physically and mentally. Glen had holes in his shorts and socks and it was the first opportunity to buy new ones.

Deggendorf is  a pleasant town, at least in the old center, and the pavement cafes were busy in the continuing hot weather.

Tea making facilities don’t seem to be provided in German accommodation of any type. We missed having a cup of tea in our room when we arrived and before facing the world at breakfast.

We bought a cheap electric jug, two cups and tea bags at the Muller store. We used it many times and it was well worth the cost even if we did have to abandon it at the end of the trip.
