DANUBE 2010: Trip Report

SALZBURG

Vienna Next Moosheim

We were getting bored by the Danube. Discussing the trip we felt it had been pleasant but no real highlights. After reading the cycling guide the stretch to Budapest seemed like more of the same so we decided to change our plans and took a train to Salzburg.

Our apartment was on the fourth floor of a fourteenth century building in the center of the old town.

The building retained its fourteenth century character with a winding stone staircase and ancient doors, but our room was spacious and comfortable with a fine view.

The first evening we ate at the K&K restaurant. It was excellent and we can recommend it (the proper restaurant upstairs not the bistro).

The next day we went to the Hohensalzburg Fortress on the funicular. It was fascinating and had great views.

Our visit coincided with the annual festival and there were musicians and marching bands as well as a large open market in the town square.

We bought local sausages and sauerkraut at the market stalls together with cakes for desert. We cooked it in the apartment - delicious.
