DANUBE 2010: Trip Report

MOOSHEIM

Salzburg Next St Gallens

We took the train from Salzburg to Radstadt to cycle down the river Enns. The weather was fine and the mountains impressive on both sides.

We followed the cycle path past the ski resorts that line the valley. We were pleased with our decision to leave the Danube.

We saw a sign for the Schloss Thannegg at Moosheim. We hadn’t gone as far as we had planned but it looked good and we were in no hurry. Schloss translates to ‘castle’ but many are, as this one, more like a manor house than a fortified structure.

Our room had a separate living room and a great view of the valley. It was a warm sunny day and we had a couple of glasses of sparkling wine on the terrace, then to dinner in the elegant dining room.

The schloss was run as family business and the owners and staff were going out of their way to make everybody feel welcome.

When we woke up it was misty outside and we couldn’t see the mountains but by the time we set off the view was breathtaking. Possibly the best start we have ever had cycling.

We bought lunch ingredients at a small supermarket in a village on the way, luckily because it was the only shop we saw during the ride.

After a time a busy freeway joined our valley and it became more industrial and shabby around Selzthal but then the freeway shot off down another valley and it became peaceful again, although we were cycling on the road.

We looked for a guest house at Admont. It was an off-season Monday and neither of the recommended ones was open but the local information center gave us a a code to a combination lock that opened a box that gave us access to a room key and we let ourselves in.
