SARLAT

Le Bugue Next Domme

The next day was cloudy with rain threatening. The hostess warned us that our planned route was a busy main road and suggested the D35.

We didn't return on the dirt track, but took the paved road which climbed steeply before a very long and steep descent back to the main road. We were pleased we had taken the dirt track the previous day.

The D35 was very quiet with some long but not too taxing hills.  The first part ran along a small river, we climbed up a long hill to its source and then along a ridge line until it dropped steeply down into Sarlat.

It was only 30km to Sarlat. We were staying in an apartment which was a charming cottage in an alley. Comfortably furnished with views over the jumble of red tiled roofs. There was a balcony where we could keep the bikes.

It was Sunday and all the food shops were shut so we had an omelet at a local café in the market square for lunch and went to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Sarlat is known deservedly as one of the most beautiful towns in France. We wandered the streets and wondered at the number of shops selling foie gras.
