FRANCE 2011: Trip Report

DOMME

Sarlat Next Nearly Lascaux

We made a day trip from Sarlat to Domme.

We headed South east on a dedicated bike path, which proved to be an old train line off the main road and an easy, scenic ride.

After leaving the bike path we climbed some fairly stiff hills to Domme. The roads were almost car free and the scenery beautiful.

Domme is a 13th century bastide town built on a cliff that overlooks the Dordogne river valley.

We had lunch at a quite elegant restaurant overlooking the ramparts with a magnificent view of the Dordogne valley.

After lunch we continued south of the Dordogne to Castelnaud where we crossed the river and went to Beynac-et-Cazenac.

The road from there to Vitrac was busy with tourists and holidaymakers on the warm day.

There were numerous canoes on the river and a stream of vans passed us returning trailer loads of canoes upstream.
