FRANCE 2011: Trip Report

NEARLY LASCAUX

Domme Next Rocamadour

We planned to cycle to Lascaux to see the famous caves. We climbed the long hill heading North on the D56 from Sarlat. The scenery was stunning and we only rarely saw a car, but the hills were long and it was a warm day.

We passed foie gras farms with happy and well fed ducks blissfully unaware of their impending fate.

About 10km before the Lascaux caves we stopped for lunch at a small pretty but unassuming restaurant.

We did not notice the menu on the way in and ordered the set lunch at 25.50 euros including a bottle of wine and an aperitif.

We assumed it would be the normal three courses and paced ourselves accordingly, but food kept coming - six-courses in all.

Every course was ample and excellent local food. The cheese board alone was probably worth the cost of the meal with its enormous selection.

It was one of the best meals we have ever eaten regardless of price.

Judging from the vans outside the other customers were local tradesmen, they were lucky if they could eat there every day.

By the time that was finished it was too late to visit the caves, and we felt as full and happy as the local ducks, so we weaved our way back to Sarlat.
