FRANCE 2011: Trip Report |
|
We took the train to Biarritz where
we spent a week. Our apartment was large and comfortable.
It was a five minute walk from the market, Les Halles,
with market stalls that sold a wonderful array of locals
cheeses, meats and vegetables. We were about ten minutes
stroll from the beaches. |

|
Biarritz started life as a tiny
fishing village that is still there, but became a fashionable
destination for wealthy-holiday makers in the nineteenth
century and early twentieth centuries. Now it has an
air of faded glory. But the beaches and cliffs are impressively
beautiful. |
 |
We made a day trip north to Bayonne.
We stopped to buy baguettes in Bayonne, a busy but pleasant,
market town and ate them sitting on a bench by the Nive
river. They were the best baguettes we have ever eaten.
We continued cycling along the path by the Nive as
far as Ustaritz. The weather was still hot but as it
was flat and with unloaded bikes it was pleasant.
