ITALY:
UMBRIA & TUSCANY 2007: Trip
Report |
|
The next day we cycled
to Assisi. The road is pretty but it was a Sunday and
we found the noise of groups of motorcyclists racing
up and down the winding roads rather annoying.
The descent into Foligno has breathtaking views but
Foligno itself was a busy and unattractive industrial
center. The road signs were little use because they
pointed to the freeway. We picked a side road that ran
in roughly the right direction more or less at random
and remarkably found ourselves on the quiet back road
to Spello.

We were exhausted when
we arrived at Assisi, but the apartment was wonderful.
It overlooked the city walls, with an unimpeded view
straight down a peaceful valley. The apartment was large,
furnished in country style and had a slightly religious
flavor, like a priest's pad. It had terra cotta tiles,
a simple
stone
sink and lots of pots, pans and other implements hanging
on the walls. |

Assisi is more touristy
than Orvieto, with souvenir shops selling tacky religious
icons. Most tourists seemed to be on organized tours
and the shops and restaurants were relatively free
of
tourists.
The Basilica of St Francis is incredible, but apart
from this we didn’t do much sightseeing in
the town. We did do a short, but very steep, bicycle
ride to
Armenzano.
