The forecast said light rain and it was drizzling. We were tempted to take the train to Florence but decided to risk cycling the 60km to Montevarchi before catching it.

The gamble seemed to be paying off in the morning as the weather cleared, but after lunch and going through the Chianti hills the rain set in. There is a 15km downhill cruise from the top of the range into Montevarchi and we arrived at the station wet and shivering.

We arrived in Florence in the dark, rush hour and rain. We half cycled and half pushed the bikes the couple of kilometers to the apartment. The apartment was in the basement but with a small garden at the rear. It was rather ramshackle but functional. We scrubbed up and went to the Lonely Planet recommended Trattoria Cavalo Nero for dinner. A good meal although rather pricey.

That's it. We spent a couple of days in Florence and then took the train back to Zagarolo.
