SWITZERLAND 2009: Trip Report

BAD RAGAZ

Grub Next Ilanz

When we awoke it was raining heavily. Cycling all day was out of the question so we put on our full rain gear and cycled the 3km to Heiden and took the train to Rorschach. The train was a single carriage and the friendly driver cheerfully helped us on with our bikes.

During our 40 minute wait at Rorschach we were pleased to see that every train had wide doors and level entry so bikes could be wheeled on fully loaded. Our train was the first (and last) we saw that had narrow doors and steep steps.

We got off at Bad Ragaz where the weather was fine.

We noticed many fine and witty sculptures throughout the town. We discovered that our visit coincided with a triennial sculpture exhibition, the largest of its kind in Europe.

We went to the information center to ask about accommodation. They gave us a list of hotels that started at 340 francs a night and said that was all there was.

We were relieved to find a basic but reasonably priced commercial hotel near the station.

When we checked out the town we realized the hotel prices on the list were nonsense.

We found a two room apartment at the Fortuna Hotel for 183 francs a night. It was a corner apartment, quite luxurious, with two balconies and impressive views, and even a kitchenette. We decided to stay two more nights.

Strangely this was one of the hotels that the tourist information office had listed as 340 francs a night for the cheapest room.

The hotel didn’t even have such expensive rooms.
