SWITZERLAND 2009: Trip Report

LAUTERBRUNNEN

Greich Next The Stillthorn

We cycled the 600 metre descent from Greich to Morel. By the time we got to Morel my front brake wasn’t working but we continued on the lesser descent to Brig where we caught the train to Spiez.

We took the slow train to Spiez to admire the scenery, the express cuts through the tunnel. The train had 'wheel in' entry for our fully loaded bikes with plenty of room to maneuver them. Far better than having to manhandle them into the goods van.

The path from Spiez to Interlaken runs alongside the lake and is next to, but separate from, the main road for most of its length. It is very scenic but noisy.

We had a coffee and cake at the Grand Hotel Restaurant in Interlaken and then pushed on to Lauterbrunnen. The path was pleasant and quiet, and we could see the magnificent peak of Jungfrau straight ahead. It was rough and we traveled slowly to avoid puncturing the rear tyres on our heavily loaded bikes.

We had assumed that Lauterbrunnen was a small village similar to Avegno and were amazed to find a large resort swarming with tourists of many nationalities. It is a major center for walking and adventure sports.

The apartment was about a kilometer past the town. It was large and new, a couple could have made it their permanent home and considered themselves well off. It was quiet apart from the early morning traffic, presumably the pick up runs for the adventure tours.

We had a lazy morning and went out to buy food for lunch at noon. We could never get used to the idea that in Switzerland even supermarkets shut from twelve to two.

While waiting for the shops to open we walked around Lauterbrunnen and were rewarded by a magnificent waterfall and a local cow ceremony.

It wasn't a tourist thing, we went for a ride up the valley and saw that the cows grazing in the fields and being herded along the road were all wearing garlands.
