SWITZERLAND 2009: Trip Report

MONTREAUX

Grosse Scheidegg Next Bouveret

We took the train to from Lauterbrunnen to Montreaux via Interlaken. We had anticipated that Montreaux would be an attractive and historic town but it is scruffy and run down.

The apartment was small, shabby and rather grubby: not what we were led to expect.

The next day was Sunday. We emailed several possible alternative accommodations and spent the day touring Lake Geneva on the ferry. The sides of the lake are terraced with vines.

The main town of Lausanne is similar to Montreaux. We looked at one of our accommodation backups from the outside but it was in a scruffy modern apartment building in a seedy area. The old town is worth a look. We were fortunate that there was an organ concert in Lausanne Cathedral that night and the renowned organist Frederic Champion (we found out later) was practicing.

The organ was made in 2003. It is very high tech' and probably the best in the world. The console is separate and movable, a 'fly by wire' organ. The sounds were incredible, even to our not particularly musical ears. Unfortunately you need to be in a cathedral (or have an equivalently large lounge room) to get the richness and depth of the sound.
