We must have been very tired because we didn’t realize how awful the apartment was until we were unpacking and it was too late to leave. It was a hovel, filthy and shabby. We got little sleep on the lumpy mattress with mosquitoes buzzing and biting. There was a violent electrical storm and a downpour.

The next day dawned fine and we were out before 7am to seek new accommodation in the city. Avignon is shabby with graffiti everywhere and the first B&B we tried told us they were full and it was a busy period so it would be difficult to find anything. We were exhausted and dispirited.

We had a coffee and rang around. Luckily a couple at Les Clos du Remparts, had decided to leave a day early and they had an unexpected vacancy. It was excellent, the beautiful central courtyard had a hammock and soon I was pleasantly dozing in the morning sun whilst the room was prepared.

In the afternoon we walked around Avignon. The town is unattractive apart from the Palais Des Papes and the gardens behind that are well worth seeing, and of course it would be unthinkable to visit Avignon without seeing the famous Pont D’Avignon (Pont De St Benezet). We had an excellent dinner at La Tout Petite recommended by Aida, the owner of our Bed & Breakfast.
