ITALY - UMBRIA & TUSCANY 2007: Trip
Report |
|
We started our tour
by taking the train to Orvieto. Because it was a Sunday
the ticket office at Zagarolo was closed but we bought
a local ticket to Rome at the news stand near the station
and then the tickets to Orvieto from the machine at Rome.
The machines offer English instructions and take credit
cards. For a bicycle you can either buy a standard single
ticket, as for a person, or a 24 hour multiple use ticket
for 3.50 Euro.
You must stamp the tickets at a little yellow machine
before boarding the train. There is nothing to warn
you about this, and the machines are scattered around
the station rather than being at the entrance to the
platforms. A lot of them are out of order, so you may
have to try a couple. There are inspectors on most
trains and you risk a fine if
your
ticket isn’t
stamped. |

There was a carriage
for bikes on the train. The front end on
the train from Zagarolo to Rome and the rear on the
train from Rome to Orvieto.
The racks on the train to Rome were quite sophisticated
and it took a few minutes to figure out how
they worked.
On the train to Orvieto the bikes simply hung from
hooks.

The trains don’t
stop for long at the small stations and we were nervous
about having time to board and disembark.
