DANUBE 2010: Trip Report

DONAUWORTH

Ulm Next Eichstatt

The 65km from Ulm to Dillingen was easy. Several stretches were on dirt or gravel paths through forests. Very pleasant cycling although the gravel was treacherous on our loaded bicycles.

Dillingen is a university town and very attractive. Apparently one of the few towns in the area that emerged unscathed from the World War II. It was student vacation and even on a Friday night the town was very quiet with only a handful of people and many restaurants shut.

The next day continued apace through flat but pleasant scenery. We stayed the night at the Donau Hotel in Donauworth.

The hotel was family owned and recently refurbished. It was more friendly and flexible, as well as cheaper, than the more starred hotels we had been using so far.

They had a washing machine and dryer for guests. This was becoming an issue because Laundromats seemed to be uncommon in the area.

We walked to the station and checked out the ticket machine. Luckily because it took half an hour and the help of various passers by to figure out how to use it.

The main problem was that you can pre-purchase ordinary tickets but we did not know bicycle tickets can only be bought on the day of travel.
