DANUBE 2010: Trip Report

ST GALLENS

Moosheim

We mostly walked the very steep three kilometers along a minor road over a saddle and then cruised fifteen kilometers downhill to St Gallens. The descent was down a pleasant valley but on the main road. We felt vulnerable enough to put on our orange safety vests for the first time since leaving Donaueschingen.

By the time we reached St Gallens the sky was covered in heavy clouds and it was obvious that rain was not far away. We found an apartment for two nights in the center of town. The café/bakery sold excellent cakes and we cooked sausages, onions and potatoes followed by a selection of cakes, not a very healthy choice but there it is.

It was still raining the next morning but it finally cleared and we walked up to the castle overlooking the town.

The next day the weather was fine and we continued down the valley. For the first fifteen kilometers we were on the main road with no bicycle path. A concern because of the large logging trucks, but then we crossed to a quiet tertiary road.

The train line ran along the same valley. We kept an eye on the timetable and got as far as Grossramimg before we had to catch the train to our prearranged apartment in Vienna.
