DANUBE 2010: Trip Report

EICHSTATT

Donauworth Next Kelheim

Catching the train was easy with walk in entry and tie down straps for the bike and it only took twenty minute to get to Treuchtlingen.

We had left the Danube because we were getting towards an industrial area so we decided to skip to the river Altmuhl and cycle through the Almuhltal Nature Park, reputed to be one of the most scenic bicycle routes in Germany. The Altmuhl joins the Donau Kanal which in turn rejoins the Danube at Kelheim.

It was a beautiful sunny, but cool, day and being a Sunday the paths were busy with families walking and cycling. When we passed through the beautiful town of Pappenheim it happened to be the annual market and they were busily setting up stalls that sold everything from trinkets to chain saws.

Eichstatt is a beautiful town. It was once the seat of the powerful bishopric of Eichstatt and has two very fine cathedrals. We regretted that we only had time for a brief visit.

We were hoping to find an apartment where we could stay for two nights, relax and have a break from rich restaurant food. However our custom of touring after the main school holiday season wasn’t working in Germany. There are too many retired Germans with the same idea, there were hardly any overseas tourists.
